Effects of Vascular Liver Disease

Vascular disorders of the liver usually result in inadequate blood flow—whether into or out of the liver. If the problem is related to blood flow out of the liver, blood backs up in the liver, causing a blockage that can result in an enlarged liver. In other cases, liver cells do not receive sufficient blood (called ischemia) and thus are denied for oxygen and nutrients. In clotting diseases, a clot may block the portal vein or a hepatic vein, it will slow down or block the blood flow. Diseases with blockages in blood-flow include:
  • Budd-Chiari syndrome results when the blood clots, block the blood flow from the liver
  • Portal vein thrombosis results when there is a blockage or narrowing of the portal vein by a blood clot.
  • Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome arises when small blood vessels within the liver are blocked.
