What is it and why do I need it?
Fibroscan is a non-invasive test that helps assess the health of your liver. Specifically, it uses ultrasound technology to determine the degree of fibrosis or scarring that may be present in your liver from various liver diseases or conditions. This information is then used by your hepatologist to individualize and optimize your treatment plan. For some patients, Fibroscan can replace liver biopsy.

They’re no risks to Fibroscan, with the exception of diagnostic error, which is very rare.
You should not eat or drink anything 3 hours before the test.
Fibroscan takes about 5-10 minutes to complete, and it is not painful. Some gel will be placed on your skin, between your ribs on your right side. A probe will then be gently moved across your skin to analyse whether there is any fibrosis in your liver.
The gel will be cleaned from your skin and you can leave the procedure suite. You will be able to drive yourself home.
- Do not eat or drink anything for 3 hours prior to your test.
- You can take your usual medications with a small sip of water
- Wear loose clothing (avoid one-piece clothing–no dresses or jumpsuits).
- Arrive 15 minutes early, to allow time for check-in before your appointment.
